Program Associate- Summer Position
Organization Background
Detroit Horse Power is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that creates equine-assisted learning opportunities for students in order to develop our five core character skills: Perseverance, Empathy, Responsible risk-taking, Confidence and Self-control (PERCS). The organization is moving closer to the long-term goal of constructing a new Detroit equestrian center on a large vacant land within Detroit’s city limits, which will make this programming scalable and accessible while supporting stronger Detroit communities.
DHP’s summer horse camp recruits students in Middle and High School from various community partners for a weeklong program introducing students to riding and working with horses as well as the life lessons they teach us. Summer camp will run from July through August. Position begins mid to late May and ends in late August. However, the start/end date is negotiable.
PROGRAM ASSOCIATE
Description & Expectations
Detroit Horse Power is currently seeking applications for a Summer Program Associate to support the success of our summer horse camp. This full-time role (32 hours/week) will report to the Program Manager. Work hours are based around horse camp, with the highest time of need on Monday - Thursday between 8-5pm, during the weeks of summer camp. Role begins on 7/5 and runs thru 8/31. Can make accommodations of the number of weeks.
Basic functional knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite and the ability to operate a printer/scanner is required. It is highly recommended, but not required, for the applicant to have a laptop computer. Travel within the city of Detroit to our barn partners is required.
In addition, the Summer Program Associate must have the ability to work independently, be a self-starter and be comfortable conveying their needs, questions or concerns via email or text message on a regular basis.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with the Grow Detroit's Young Talent (GDYT) program (data entry, communicating with students, orientation set up)
Responsible for transporting 4 GDYT students to and from camp daily
Scan student paperwork (waivers, evaluation surveys, etc), save to correct Google Drive folder
Maintain organized student paperwork filing system on Google Drive and ensure all student paperwork is kept confidential
Support Program Operations Manager with communication regarding student transportation each day for summer camp
Arrange, secure and distribute food for students daily during summer camp
Communicate with barn facility partners and families when requested
Assist with facilitating programming when requested
Organize, distribute and disinfect supplies for students when needed
Lead on moving supplies to and from partner barn and DHP office or storage unit
Skills & Qualifications
High school degree or higher (college degree preferred)
Relevant experience in a similar role highly preferred
Good written and verbal communication skills
Basic Microsoft Office skills
Google Drive experience
Experience working with youth
Valid Driver's License
Must have reliable transportation available daily
Compensation
Full-time hourly position compensation at $16/hour with an approximate average of 32 hours per week expected. Mileage reimbursement for travel to and from camp will be provided.
