DHP End of the Year Giving Campaign

Detroit students are the future of our city. At Detroit Horse Power, we have made it our mission to support youth to develop the tools to succeed through working with and caring for horses. Horses provide our students a second home. A place to belong.

Horses also teach us about ourselves in a way that not many animals can. They connect with who we are in the moment and help us learn about ourselves through Perseverance, Empathy, Responsible risk-taking, Confidence, and Self-control. These PERCS are at the core of our programming and help us propel our students further.

Will you help us continue to give them a place that is safe where they can show up as their most authentic selves?

It’s amazing to see how curiosity draws our participants in, but what keeps our students engaged is the sense of community and belonging. Life is overwhelming for young people, especially those who benefit from strong guidance. Our programming aims to help them work through those difficult decisions and emotions. They have the opportunity to take responsible risks and over time, they take on new leadership roles to serve as peer role models. This is how they continue to gain confidence and learn perseverance, empathy, and self-control.

Our summer camps, after-school classroom sessions, and barn visits leverage the power of horses to promote personal growth in all our participants. Horses are powerful creatures that offer a mirror into oneself and one’s feelings. When our students connect with this concept, they learn empathy which strengthens their relationships with everyone around them.

DHP has created a safe space for our Detroit youth and at the end of the day, our students get to call themselves equestrians. Their family and friends are in AWE of this. And we are in AWE of THEM!

Our students sought a community. A place to belong. A place to call home. A place for horses and humans. They’ve found that with us, so please don’t wait - give the gift of home today.

“I can’t imagine who I would be without Detroit Horse Power,” Senior, Le’Airra Jones reflects. “It’s scary to think, like most teenagers, that I was always one decision away from negatively impacting my future for life. Everything can be so critical during your teenage years. What you do with your time. Who you spend your time with. What you think about yourself and how you fit in.”
